Book Design

This book was done in Benjamin Critton`s class in the School of Visual Arts in Spring 2014, and is meant to help others reflect on their own lives. I offer an example from my own life so that the readers can explore their own. The artworks in this book are essentially my philosophy of life.

My inspiration comes from an important element in my life-the rainbow palette of color.

I gave each color a specific meaning. Pink represents love, white represents myself as I envision myself as a pure human being without being polluted. Yellow represents you - the viewer, as I regards you as the sunshine in my life. I created a color matrix of my life system which shows the different combinations of colors indicating different meanings.

Moreover, the different quantity of the color drops represent extended meanings. For example, one drop of yellow ink means "you", two drops of it means "you" in plural.

The modules live inside a big tank filled with water, which represents the fluidity and vital elements of life. Every time when different color inks were dropped into and mixed within the water tanks, a special message and meaning were formed and manifested within my life. For example, the message, "I love you" is sent out by the drop of pink , white, and yellow inks into the water tank, and it can only be conveyed when the mix and blend happen in the water tank.

I see and comprehend the world using color. My life system has a cognitive quality. It is important for me to visualize the world and my relationship with others. By viewing my life system, other people have a way to understand their relationship to me and how I project them into my life.

I chose to use unmarked flipbooks to show my project in movement-how the ink drops look in the jars. The books are all different, even though the covers look the same.

Haiku:

Life is colorful,

Everyone should know their own,

This book is your guide.

Colophon:

Designed and printed by Lusha Huang.

Typeset in Basic Commercial.

Printed and bound in New York.

This project is a part of the Graphic Narrative course in the MFA Products of Design Program in the School of Visual Arts. It was inspired by the previous works of Lusha Huang titled "The flow of colorful life" in Deconstruction & Reconstruction course.

Special thanks to Benjamin Critton who led this amazing class, Allan Chochinov who founded the MFA Products of Design program and Ayse Birsel who gave me an opportunity to discover my life.
