I Don’t Vote

A Non-Voting Booth targeting college students designed to provoke dialog while simulating voting behaviors to condition those who don’t vote. This provocation was installed in Washington Square Park on Mid-term election day 2014 and individuals not planning to vote were invited to “not vote here”. Non-voters stood in line and upon entering the booth encountered a ballot box with non-voting instructions on it. A toggle switch activated an audio recorder and by speaking into the box they could record their reason for not voting. Once the process was completed, non-voters selected a sticker identifying their reason and applied it to the exterior of the booth further reinforcing the sense of agency in this non-voting process. The waiting, the toggle switch, the aesthetics of the booth, and the exit polling were all designed to mimic the actual voting experience with the goal of inciting voting behaviors in future elections.
